(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Research Purposes) Regulations 2001 and shall come into force on 31st January 2001.
(2) In these Regulations “the Act” means the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990.

(1) The Authority may issue a licence for research under paragraph 3 of Schedule 2 to the Act for any of the purposes specified in the following paragraph.
(2) A licence may be issued for the purposes of—
(a) increasing knowledge about the development of embryos;
(b) increasing knowledge about serious disease, or
(c) enabling any such knowledge to be applied in developing treatments for serious disease.
