These regulations may be cited as the Dental Auxiliaries (Amendment) Regulations 1999 and shall come into force on 1st January 2000.

The Dental Auxiliaries Regulations 1986 shall be amended in accordance with the following provisions of these Regulations.

In regulation 2 after “the entry is made.” insert—“The Registrar may enter in such roll in respect of any person entitled to have his name entered therein details of any additional diplomas connected with dentistry held by that person, which have been approved by the Council for that purpose.”

(1) Regulation 4 (retention of names in a roll) shall be amended as follows:
(2) In paragraph (1), for the words from “a signed” to “fee”, substitute “payment of the appropriate fee for retention of the name until 31st December in the next following year, together with sufficient information to identify the person in respect of whom the payment is made”.
(3) For paragraph (2), substitute—“
(2) Not later than the 1st December in every year, the Registrar shall send to every person whose name is entered in a roll of dental auxiliaries notice of the fee payable for retention of name on that roll and a warning that failure to pay the fee will result in erasure, but failure to receive such a notice shall not itself constitute a ground for retention or restoration of a name.”.

In regulation 6 (fees prescribed by the General Dental Council), for “£20.00” substitute “£25.00” and for “£5.00” substitute “£10.00”.

In regulation 23 (dental hygienists), after paragraph (3) insert—“
(4) A dental hygienist shall be permitted to place a temporary dressing in a tooth, under the direction of a registered dentist, where a filling has fallen out during the course of dental work being carried out by the dental hygienist under the provisions of this regulation, provided that the dental hygienist—
(a) advises the patient to make an appointment with his dentist as soon as is reasonably practical after the dental work has taken place; and
(b) informs the patient’s dentist as soon as reasonably practical after it has taken place.”.

In regulation 27 (dental therapists), after paragraph (2) insert—“
(3) A dental therapist shall be permitted to place a temporary dressing in a tooth, under the direction of a registered dentist, where a filling has fallen out during the course of dental work being carried out by the dental therapist under the provisions of this regulation, provided that the dental therapist—
(a) advises the patient to make an appointment with his dentist as soon as is reasonably practical after the dental work has taken place:
 and
(b) informs the patient’s dentist as soon as is reasonably practical after it has taken place.”.
