(1) This Order may be cited as the Professions Supplementary to Medicine (Paramedics Board) Order of Council 1999 and shall come into force immediately after the coming into force of the Professions Supplementary to Medicine (Clinical Scientists Board) Order of Council.
(2) In this Order, “the Act” means the Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act 1960.

The Act shall have effect as if the profession of paramedics were mentioned in section 1(2) of the Act, and accordingly the First Schedule to the Act (constitutions of the Council and boards, and supplementary provisions) shall have effect as if there were made the further alterations, additions or omissions specified in the Schedule to this Order.

SCHEDULE
Article 2
1 
Part I of the First Schedule to the Act (constitutions of the Council and boards, and supplementary provisions) shall have effect as if–
(a) in paragraph 1(1), for “thirty-three” there were substituted “thirty-six”;
(b) in paragraph 1(1)(b), for “eleven” there were substituted “thirteen” and for “five only shall be registered medical practitioners” there were substituted “six only shall be registered medical practitioners”;
(c) in paragraph 1(1)(c), for “eleven” there were substituted “twelve”;
(d) in paragraph 3(2), for “the professions of arts therapists, clinical scientists, orthoptists, prosthetists and orthotists and speech and language therapists” there were substituted “the professions of arts therapists, clinical scientists, orthoptists, paramedics, prosthetists and orthotists, and speech and language therapists”; and
(e) after paragraph 3(7) there were added the following sub-paragraph–“
(8) Before making an appointment under this paragraph as respects the profession of paramedics the said Ministers shall consult the Ambulance Service Association.”.

Part II of the First Schedule to the Act (Constitution of the boards) shall have effect as if–
(a) in the table at the end of paragraph 4(1)–
(i) in column (4) there were added after sub-column (i) sub-column (j) with the heading “The Royal College of Anaesthetists”, with the symbol “-” in the entry for each existing board, and
(ii) under the line relating to membership of the Orthoptists Board, there were inserted the entries set out below in relation to the Paramedics Board–

(b) after paragraph 7(4D) there were inserted the following sub-paragraph–“
(4E) Of the three members of the Paramedics Board appointed in pursuance of the said paragraph (d)–
(a) one shall be a member of a body which represents the interests of employers of paramedics;
(b) one shall be a member of a body which represents the interests of patients of paramedics; and
(c) one shall be a registered nurse.”; and
(c) in paragraph 8(3), for “(2), (3), (4), (5), (6) or (7)” there were substituted “(2), (3), (4), (5), (6), (7) or (8)”.
