(1) This Order may be cited as the Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in History) (Wales) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 31st August 1998.
(2) In this Order–
 “the Document” means the Document published by Her Majesty’s Stationery Office in January 1995 entitled “History in the National Curriculum (Wales)”; and
 references to the first, second and third key stages are to the periods mentioned in paragraphs (a), (b) and (c) respectively of section 355(1) of the Education Act 1996.
(3) This Order applies only in relation to schools in Wales.

The Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in History) (Wales) Order 1995 is hereby revoked.

(1) Paragraph (2) below applies in relation to pupils in the first and second key stages at schools in Wales, but only in relation to the school years beginning in 1998 and 1999 respectively.
(2) It is hereby directed that the provisions relating to attainment targets and programmes of study set out in the Document shall have effect for the purpose of specifying the attainment targets and programmes of study in relation to history with the amendments specified in the Schedule.
(3) Paragraph (4) below applies–
(a) in relation to pupils in the first and second key stages at schools in Wales, but only in relation to school years beginning in or after 2000; and
(b) in relation to pupils in the third key stage at such schools (in relation to any school year).
(4) It is hereby directed that the provisions relating to attainment targets and programmes of study set out in the Document shall have effect for the purpose of specifying attainment targets and programmes of study in relation to history.

The examples printed in italics in the Document (which serve to illustrate the programmes of study described therein) do not form part of the provision made by this Order.

SCHEDULE
AMENDMENT OF THE DOCUMENT AS IT APPLIES TO PUPILS IN THE FIRST AND SECOND KEY STAGES IN THE SCHOOL YEARS COMMENCING IN 1998 AND 1999.

The Document is amended as follows.

In the section headed “KEY STAGE 2 PROGRAMME OF STUDY”–
(a) in the box which appears immediately below the sub-heading “Study Unit 1: Life in Early Wales and Britain” there is inserted at the end of the text therein the following–
 “Pupils should be taught about one only of the following: `The earliest peoples' (paragraph 1) or `Celtic society' (paragraph 2) or `ONE later invasion and its impact on Wales and Britain' (paragraph 3).”;
(b) in the box which appears immediately below the sub-heading “Study Unit 2: Life in Wales and Britain in Tudor and Stuart Times” there is inserted at the end of the text therein the following–
 “As regards `Life in Tudor and Stuart Wales' (paragraph 2), pupils should be taught either about life in Tudor Wales or about life in Stuart Wales.”; and
(c) in the box which appears immediately below the sub-heading “Study Unit 3: Life in Modern Wales and Britain” there is inserted at the end of the text therein the following–
 “Pupils should be taught about `Life and work in ONE contrasting period of the twentieth century' (paragraph 3) and one of either `Wales as an industrial country' (paragraph 1)or `The lives of people in town and country' (paragraph 2).”.
