These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Assisted Places) (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 1996 and shall come into force on 1st August 1996.

The Education (Assisted Places) (Scotland) Regulations 1995 are amended as follows:–
(a) after regulation 2(1) (interpretation) add–“
(1A) In these Regulations imperial measurements are supplementary indications of distance.”.
(b) in regulation 5 (conditions as to age and education) for the words “10 years on or before 31st July of” substitute “5 years before 1st March of the calendar year immediately succeeding” and for the words from “comprising” to the end substitute “other than activities in nursery schools and nursery classes”;
(c) in regulation 9(3) and (5) (references to income) for the words “£1,165” in the three places where they occur substitute “£1,200”;
(d) in regulation 13(2) (scales of remission) for the words “£9,711” substitute “£9,873”;
(e) in regulation 15 (school travel grants for day pupils and amounts thereof)–
(i) in paragraph (2) for the words “3 miles each way” substitute “3.2 kilometres (2 miles) each way in the case of pupils whose age does not exceed 8 years and 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) each way in the case of pupils of any other age, in each case the kilometres (miles) being”;
(ii) in paragraph (5)(a) for the words “25 miles” in both places where they occur substitute “40.2 kilometres (25 miles)” and for the words “miles of” substitute “kilometres (miles) of”; and
(iii) in paragraph (6) for the words “£9,724” and “£9,545” substitute “£9,886” and “£9,707” respectively;
(f) in regulation 16 (school travel grants for boarding pupils and amounts thereof)–
(i) in paragraph (3) for the words “3 miles” and “50 miles” in both places where they occur substitute “4.8 kilometres (3 miles)” and “80.5 kilometres (50 miles)” respectively and for the words “miles of” substitute “kilometres (miles) of”; and
(ii) in paragraph (5) for the words “£9,724” and “£9,545” substitute “£9,886” and “£9,707” respectively;
(g) for paragraphs (2) and (3) of regulation 17 (clothing grants) substitute–“
(2) In an assisted pupil’s first assisted year, clothing grant shall be made in the case of such a pupil as respects whom the relevant income does not exceed £11,056 and in such case the grant shall be of an amount equal to so much of the clothing expenditure as does not exceed–
(a) £169, where the relevant income does not exceed £9,707;
(b) £127, where that income exceeds £9,707 but does not exceed £10,159
(c) £83, where that income exceeds £10,159 but does not exceed £10,595;
(d) £43, where that income exceeds £10,595 but does not exceed £11,056.
(3) In any subsequent school year in which clothing grant is made, it shall be made in the case of an assisted pupil as respects whom the relevant income does not exceed £10,595 and in such case the grant shall be of an amount equal to so much of the clothing expenditure disregarding expenditure in respect of which a previous grant has been paid, as does not exceed–
(a) £63, where the relevant income does not exceed £9,873;
(b) £33, where that income exceeds £9,873 but does not exceed £10,595”; and
(h) for Schedule 2 substitute the following Schedule:–“
