These Regulations may be cited as the Ceramic Ware (Safety) Regulations 1988 and shall come into force on 20 October 1989.

The Glazed Ceramic Ware (Safety) Regulations 1975, the Glazed Ceramic Ware (Safety) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1975, the Vitreous Enamel-ware (Safety) Regulations 1976 and the Vitreous Enamel-ware (Safety) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1976 are hereby revoked.

(1) In these Regulations—
 “BS 6748” means the British Standard Specification for limits of metal release from ceramic ware, glassware, glass ceramic ware and vitreous enamel ware BS 6748: 1986 published by the British Standards Institution on 29th August 1986;
 “ceramic ware” has the meaning given in clause 2 of BS 6748, but does not include ceramic ware not intended to come into contact with foodstuffs.
(2) Any reference in these Regulations to any requirement or test specified in BS 6748 includes a reference to any requirement or test incorporated in BS 6748 by reference to any other British Standard Specification as amended before 29th August 1986.

Ceramic ware shall satisfy the requirements of BS 6748 applicable to such ware when tested in accordance with the provisions of clause 4 of and the Appendix to BS 6748.
5 
No person shall supply, offer to supply, agree to supply, expose for supply or possess for supply any ceramic ware in respect of which any of the requirements of these Regulations is not satisfied.
