These Regulations may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Medical Stores) (Amendment) Regulations 1988 and shall come into force on 28th July 1988.

The Merchant Shipping (Medical Stores) Regulations 1986 shall be amended as follows—
(1) In regulation 1(3) there shall be inserted in the appropriate places the following definitions—“
 “Class VI or VIA passenger vessels” means vessels when operating as vessels of those Classes within the meaning of the Merchant Shipping (Passenger Ship Construction and Survey) Regulations 1984;
 “IMDG Code” means the 1988 edition of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code published by the International Maritime Organization;”.
(2) All references in regulation 1(6), 5, 6(3), 7(1) and 8 to “Merchant Shipping Notice No. 1200” shall be replaced by references to “Merchant Shipping Notice No. 1319”.
(3) In regulation 3(2),
(a) for “entry 6 of column 1” there shall be substituted “entry 7 of column 1”;
(b) for “the Chemicals Supplement to the Ship Captain’s Medical Guide (published by Her Majesty’s Stationery Office)” there shall be substituted “the International Maritime Organization Medical First Aid Guide for use in Accidents Involving Dangerous Goods (1985 edition) (published by the International Maritime Organization)”.
(4) For the table in regulation 3 the following shall be substituted—“

For vessels on voyages exceeding 100 miles to or from any place outside the Limited European Trading Area or the Baltic Sea (including the Gulfs of Bothnia and Finland). Scale 1
For vessels plying either within the Limited European Trading Area and the Baltic Sea (including the Gulfs of Bothnia and Finland) or elsewhere on the voyage not exceeding 100 miles except as described for Scales IIA, III, IV and V below. Scale II
For vessels on voyages within the Limited European Trading Area and the Baltic Sea (including the Gulfs of Bothnia and Finland) carrying not more than 8 persons except as described in Scale IV below. Scale IIA
For vessels proceeding to sea on voyages between ports in the British Isles and wholly within the Limited European Trading Area except as described for Scales IV and V below. Scale III
For vessels on voyages not exceeding 72 hours duration between ports in the British Isles, and also for vessels carrying not more than 8 persons between ports in the British Isles and ports on the Continent of Europe between the River Elbe and Brest. Scale IV
For seagoing vessels and other passenger vessels within smooth or partially smooth waters or the specified areas referred to in Merchant Shipping Notice M.979. Scale V
Vessels carrying chemicals as the whole or part of a cargo in quantities carried in excess of those defined in Volume 1 Section 18 of the IMDG Code, or the residues from earlier such cargoes. Scale VI subject to regulation 3(2) above
For ships, other than Class VI and VIA passenger vessels, proceeding to sea carrying more than 12 passengers with no qualified doctor as a member of the crew. Scale VII”
(5) In regulation 7(2), after “Ship Captain’s Medical Guide” there shall be inserted “(published by Her Majesty’s Stationery Office)”.
