These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Schools and Further Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1987 and shall come into force for the purposes of this regulation and regulation 2 on 8th June 1987 and for all other purposes on 1st August 1987.

In regulation 10 (Duration of school year and day) of the Education (Schools and Further Education) Regulations 1981 paragraph (7) shall be amended as follows—
(1) For the words “the academic year 1985/86” there shall be substituted the words “the year ending on 31st July 1987”;
(2) In the proviso, for the words “four sessions” there shall be substituted the words “two sessions”.

With effect from 1st August 1987 the said regulation 10 shall be further amended as follows—
(1) In paragraph (2), for the provision before the proviso there shall be substituted the following provision—“
(2) In each academic year a school shall meet for not less than 380 sessions which shall constitute the school year so however that nothing in this paragraph shall require a nursery class to meet for that number of sessions:”;
(2) In paragraph (3), for the words “paragraphs (5), (6) and (7)” there shall be substituted the words “paragraphs (5) and (6)”;
(3) For paragraph (7) there shall be substituted the following paragraph—“
(7) In this regulation “academic year” means a period of 12 months beginning on 1st September unless the school has a term beginning in August in which case it means a period of 12 months beginning on 1st August.”.

The Education (Schools and Further Education) (Amendment) Regulations 1986 are hereby revoked.
