(1) These regulations may be cited as the Social Security (Notification of Deaths) Regulations 1987 and shall come into force on 6th April 1987.
(2) In these regulations “data material” has the same meaning as in section 41 of the Data Protection Act 1984.

The particulars of death which are required to be furnished to the Secretary of State under these regulations are required to be so furnished for the purposes of his functions under the benefit Acts and the functions of the Department of Health and Social Services for Northern Ireland under any corresponding Northern Ireland legislation.

In respect of deaths occurring in England or Wales, it shall be the duty of each registrar of births and deaths, in relation to deaths registered by him, to furnish the Secretary of State with such particulars of the death of a person as are specified in Schedule 1 to these regulations, or as many of such particulars as are available to him, as soon as it is reasonably practicable to do so.

In respect of deaths occurring in Scotland, it shall be the duty of the Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages for Scotland in relation to deaths notified to him, to furnish the Secretary of State with such particulars of the death of a person as are specified in Schedule 2 to these regulations, or as many of such particulars as are available to him, as soon as it is reasonably practicable to do so.

The prescribed manner in which particulars are required to be furnished to the Secretary of State under these regulations, is either in writing or on data material.
