This Order may be cited as the London
Cab Order 1985 and shall come into operation on 14th July 1985.

In this Order a reference to the principal
Order is a reference to the 
London Cab Order 1934.

For paragraph
35 of the principal Order there shall be substituted
the following paragraph:—“
35 

(1) The owner of every motor cab shall cause
the cab to be fitted with a taximeter of a type approved by the Assistant
Commissioner.
(2) Subject to 
sub-paragraph (4) of this paragraph, any such
meter shall be so constructed and adjusted that
(a) after the mechanism of the meter has
been activated at the commencement of a hiring, the fare payable for the hiring,
as prescribed in paragraph 40(1)
and (2) of this Order, is
automatically recorded and displayed by the meter; and
(b) the total up to an amount of not less
than 10p of any extra charges payable by a hirer of the cab, can be displayed
by the meter.
(3) Every taximeter so fitted shall be sealed
in such manner as the Assistant Commissioner may from time to time direct
and may be marked in such manner as the Assistant Commissioner may from time
to time permit, and no person shall place such seal or mark on the taximeter
unless he is authorised in that behalf by the Assistant Commissioner.
(4) The requirements of 
sub-paragraph (2)(a) of this paragraph shall
not apply during the transitional period specified in 
Schedule E to this Order.”.

For paragraph
40 of the principal Order there shall be substituted
the following paragraph:—“
40 

(1) Subject to the following provisions of
this paragraph, the fare payable for the hiring of a motor cab shall be according
to the following scale:—
(a) a hiring charge of 40p, and
(b) in respect of any part of the hiring
during which the cab travels at a speed exceeding 10.11 miles an hour, at
the rate of 20p for 534 yards or, if the fare shown on the taximeter is £4.40
or more, thereafter at the rate of 20p for 356 yards, and
(c) in respect of any part of the hiring
during which the cab is stationary or travels at a speed not exceeding 10.11
miles an hour, at a rate of 20p for 108 seconds or, if the fare shown on the
taximeter is £4.40 or more, thereafter at the rate of 20p for 72 seconds.

(2) In any case where the fare according
to the scale prescribed in sub-paragraph (1)
 above is less than 80p the fare payable shall
be 80p, and in any other case where the fare exceeds a multiple of 20p by
a sum which is less than 20p the fare payable shall be the next higher multiple
of 20p.
(3) At any time during the transitional period
specified in Schedule E
to this Order when a motor cab is fitted with a taximeter which is not capable
of recording and displaying automatically the fare payable according to the
scale prescribed in sub-paragraph (1)
above, the fare payable—
(a) where the fare shown on the meter does
not exceed £10.00 shall, if a notice in the terms set out in that Schedule
is kept prominently displayed in the cab in such a manner as to be clearly
legible to the hirer, be, as respects a fare shown on the meter, the figure
in the column headed “Fare payable” opposite to the figure in
the column headed “Shown on meter”, and otherwise shall be the
fare shown on the meter;
(b) where the fare shown on the meter exceeds
£10.00 shall, as respects the amount by which the fare shown exceeds
the highest multiple of £10.00 in that fare, be the fare payable under
the foregoing provisions of this sub-paragraph and in addition £10.80
shall be payable as respects each multiple of £10.00 in the fare shown
on the meter.”.

For Schedule
E to the principal Order there shall be substituted
the Schedule set out in the Schedule to this Order.

Paragraph 40(3)

From 14th July 1985 to 13th
September 1985 (inclusive) (in this Order referred to as 
“the transitional period”) for all journeys beginning
and ending within the Metropolitan and/or City Police Districts the fare shown
on the taximeter, excluding extras, is (as authorised by the 
London Cab Order 1985) increased as shown in
