(1) These Rules shall come into operation on 1st May 1969 and may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Life-Saving Appliances) (Second Amendment) Rules 1969.
(2) The Interpretation Act 1889 shall apply to the interpretation of these Rules as it applies to the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.

TheMerchant Shipping (Life-Saving Appliances) Rules 1965 as amended  shall be further amended as follows:—
(a) in Rule 9(4) the words “at least 70 per cent of” in the penultimate line shall be deleted; and
(b) in Schedule 12, Part I, paragraph 5(d) the following shall be substituted for the final sentence:—“
The sewing shall be carried out with thread of undyed linen yarn having a count of 25 lea, 3 cord reverse twist (resultant Tex count 66), satin finish and complying with the specifications in Clauses 2, 3 and 4 (except subparagraph 4((a)) of British Standards Specification No.BS 4F 34: 1960: for thread of that count.
